You’re in the last year of middle school, and you should begin to accumulate community service hours. Contact your high school guidance counselor or if need be the principal. You don’t want your well spent time not to count. By the time you enter high school, you can be well on your way to having that magic number of 1,000 appear on your transcript when it’s time to apply to college. Here is a list of some additional things you can do to properly prepare for high school, and take it by storm!

  • If you’re fortunate enough or you had the insight to take a foreign language, learn 5-10 new words a week, and be sure to complete 4 years of it

  • If it’s not part of your daily routine, read the local newspaper every day and discuss the news with your peers and especially your parents

  • Do some pleasure reading (other than comic books) every day

  • Get a pocket dictionary and learn 5-10 new words every day - your SAT scores will amaze your friends

  • If you’re fortunate to be career minded, do research on colleges with the best programs and plan a visit or 2 if it’s feasible

  • Set yourself up for AP and Honors classes in the 9th grade

  • Read my brief article, Students, Assets and Work, to get a better idea of financial aid consequences in the not too distant future

  • If possible, take a course in public speaking - it will benefit you in the future

  • Join a club or two and become an officer, not just a member

  • More to follow…
